Frequently Asked Questions PDF Print E-mail

Q: Who is Classic Motorsports Group?
A:Located in Carlsbad, California, Classic Motorsports Group, formerly Classic Chevy 5-Speed specializes in Tremec 5-speed transmission conversion kits and related transmission installation parts. Focusing our attention exclusively on Tremec TKO Transmission conversion kits for classic GM cars, we specialize in helping Chevy owners with 5-Speed transmission swap solutions for their classic cars. Our intense concentration enables us to devote all of our attention to the needs of the classic Chevy enthusiast. If you would like a referral to a Tremec representative, let us know and we would be glad to help.
Q: How will the TKO-500 or TKO-600 affect the performance of my car?
A: The most noticeable difference will be smooth shifting and improved freeway driving. You will experience as much as a 36% reduction in RPM’s while in overdrive (5th gear) which means higher cruising speeds, a more quite ride, and much better gas mileage! Additionally, the new TKO’s are strong transmissions designed to handle up to 500 ft/lbs. of torque (TKO-500) and 600 ft/lbs. of torque (TKO-600) so if you want to drive your car hard the Tremec TKO’s are up to the task.
Q: Will a Tremec transmission fit into my particular car?
A: The Tremec TKO transmission will bolt directly to most GM bellhousings. Every car is different and some cars will accept the transmission better than others meaning that your car may require modification to the tunnel, crossmember, console, etc. There are some GM cars that will not accept this transmission, or will require major modifications. For more detailed information regarding installing a Tremec into many popular GM models, go to the “installation notes” section on the menu to the left or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with any questions you may have.
Q: What other parts will I need to install my transmission?
A: If your car already has a manual transmission, the only parts you will definitely need are a C6 slip yoke, a speedometer adapter, and GM Syncromesh transmission fluid. If your car is currently an automatic you will also need a clutch/brake pedal assembly, linkage, bellhousing, clutch fork, flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, etc.
Other items that you may want to consider replacing or upgrading are: custom crossmember, transmission mount, 2” offset shifter, 5-speed shift knob, clutch disc, pressure plate, TO bearing, and pilot bearing. We can provide you with these items at competitive prices.
Q: Where can I find out more about the new Tremec TKO-500 & TKO-600’s?
A: You can view a press release about the new TKO’s here – http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/news/20news.asp
Q: What are the differences between the two TKO-600 models?
A: Other than the different overdrive ratios, and a small difference in price, these transmissions are identical. The “road race” TKO-600 (part # 4618) has a .82 fifth gear while the “street” TKO (part # 5009) has a .64 fifth gear for lower RPM cruising.
Q. I just ordered a custom driveshaft from Classic Motorsports Group. How do I measure for proper length?
A. Click here for the printable driveshaft measurement sheet. When complete, fax measurement sheet back to Classic Motorsports Group at (760)438-2271 for immediate processing.
Q: How can I determine what RPM my car will run at with a TKO transmission?
A: There are several RPM/MPH calculators on the internet. Click here for a calculator that will let you determine your RPM's at any speed/gear combination. You will need to input the transmission gear ratios for the Tremec along with your rear gear ratio and your rear tire size to perform the calculation.
Q. How do I hook up my neutral safety switch to my TKO?
A. You can find a detailed write-up for one possible solution by clicking on the following link http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref4.html.

Hurst Blackjack Shifter for Tremec TKO & Tremec T56 Magnum Transmissions

When installing a Tremec TKO 5-speed or T56 Magnum 6-speed into a classic car, achieving shifter stick positioning in the stock shifter location is a priority for many applications. In addition to achieving correct shift stick positioning it is equally important to use a high quality shifter that is built to last and that has a good shifting feel. In other words a shifter that positions the shifter stick in the correct location but is poorly built is not an adequate solution. With these requirements in mind we have engineered the Hurst Blackjack shifter. The Blackjack shifter is direct bolt on unit that requires no modification to the transmission.

  • Factory fit in stock center consoles
  • No console modifications required!
  • Short throw design
  • Billet aluminum construction
  • Low profile design for easy fitment
  • 360* Delron pivot ball
  • Genuine Hurst quality
